In Friday's Maury Gallagher immediately announced that Jimmie Johnson will be buying into the PettyGMS organization. Jimmie said that the path back to NASCAR wasn't something he saw in his future, calling it "incredible". It was an offer to a life changing opportunity that he had to take, saying that things escalated quickly" On top of ownership, he will be fielding a 3rd car in 2023 starting at the 2023 Daytona 500. The limited schedule for next season will be, in Jimmie's words, "Fun races". The addition of Johnson to the team brings 14 Cup titles, 2 Truck Series titles and 1 ARCA title with over 330 National Series Victories. Richard Petty said he will not be here in another 15-20 years, and Jimmie can take over. Johnson said he has always felt like a resource for younger drivers and will continue to be the same for the younger PettyGMS drivers in Erik Jones and upcoming Noah Gragson. Johnson said he knows 1 aspect of the sport and is willing to learn the different aspects of the sport implying ownership. One of the things Jimmie mentioned mentioned was his conversations with Justin Marks and his Project 91 over at TrackHouse Racing, also talking about his desire to come back with Rick Hendrick and HMS Vice-Chairman Jeff Gordon. Clearly this takes Johnson off the radar for the 91 Car with TrackHouse's Project 91 and obviously not an HMS supported car either. When asked about a long term goal in his new roll, Johnson doesn't really have one quite yet which is a very respectable answer.

Tom Luttermoser"Being a NASCAR fan since the mid-90s, I've seen my sport go through immense changes, from Earnhardt to Gordon, Gordon to Johnson, Johnson to the "Big 3". Petty's 200 to Busch's 229*. I've seen 2 generations of racers and 4 generations of racecars. I've seen the peak of the sport, I've seen the loss of a legend. I can, in fact say.. This is the greatest time our sport has seen since its golden era and it will do nothing but grow from here. We talk about the Golden Era, The Modern Era. I think, We're entering the NEXT GEN Era."
